Lake Bathymetry Used to Place Fish Habitat Structure

Lake Bathymetry was performed by Tony Byrne with Absolute Natural Resources, LLC (ANR) for a homeowner in the Denver, Colorado area.  The purpose of this project was to create a base map of lake depths and locate ideal places to install new fish habitat structure.  The initial step included the data collection for the contour map which was then examined by aquatic biologists at ANR to narrow down prime placement of the new structure.  Once the structure was placed in the field, GPS coordinates were captured and labeled on the map allowing the owner precise locations of his new fishing hot spots.

The finished project included a Bathymetric Lake Map with 3D Color-shaded depths and contour map with precise GPS locations of all 11 fish habitat structures.

Lake Mapping as a Tool for Successful Lake Management

Successful lake management requires an understanding of composition, depth and volume of your lake.  Greg Grimes, President of Aquatic  Environmental  Services, Inc (Ball Ground, Georgia), had a client request an updated lake map to note current depths and mark sediment depths.  Information gathered during the lake mapping process helped Mr. Grimes’ client better comprehend the level of sedimentation building up over time in this fishing lake.  The resulting map provided the baseline depth profile needed for long-term sedimentation monitoring.  Plus, the property owners had several large format wall maps printed to show friends and family where to catch the big ones!

New Jersey GPS Lake Mapping Project

Allied Biological recently completed a unique lake mapping project in New Jersey.   The Borough of Mountain Lakes is set to celebrate it’s 100th birthday in 2011 and the  Lakes Committee, Environmental Commission and the Borough Council decided to create an up-to-date lake map for the residents of the community as part of their Centennial Legacy Project.  The resulting maps will benefit the community by showing fishing hot spots  and will be used as a management tool to assure another century of enjoyment for local citizens.

Engineers Select Local Bathymetric Lake Mapping Expert

Virginia Lake Management provided a bathymetric lake mapping survey for a lake in Virginia.  Engineers recently performed a flood study on the dam and found the spillway insufficient.  While preparing an engineering report to propose upgrade options the only bathymetric data available was hand collected in the 1950’s.  As a local expert on bathymetric mapping, Virgina Lake Management was able to conduct an accurate, up-to-date lake depth map for the engineer’s report.  This new lake survey will provide the precise lake depths needed to create the best dam upgrade options.   In addition, the data from the new survey will assist engineers in determining the amount of volume reduction achieved if the decision is made to lower the lake level a few feet.
