Preparing for Your Pond’s Future – SOLitude Lake Management

Preparing for Your Pond’s Future by SOLitude Lake Management

As ponds age, their composition changes.  Years and years of leaves falling into the pond or sediment from stormwater runoff can drastically change the pond’s bottom.  What once was a pond that had an average depth of 5 feet may now be only 3 and in some places there may be less than one foot of depth.
One of the best monitoring tools a pond owner can use is bathymetry.  Mapping the bottom of the pond shows areas of concern and can also give you an idea of when dredging may be necessary.  With dredging being such a large expense, pond owners can use this tool to help budget for this project in the future.

At this time of the year, when many of you are working with budgets, this tool may be an important one to discuss with your community. Improper planning could leave a community in a situation where a special assessment may be the only solution to cover the expense of a dredging project.  Arming your community with this knowledge will prove to have a great impact on the future.

A pond that has filled in with sediment from stormwater runoff or other organic sources will have more problems in the long run with algae and weeds and will become less healthy over time.  Knowing the water and sediment depths can give you an understanding of what is happening in your pond and the direction that your pond is heading. We can provide you with excellent 3D maps, seen here, to illustrate just what the bottom of the pond looks like.  Contact us today to plan for the future of your pond.

Lake Manager is Growing 7 lb Bass in 28 months

Greg Grimes with Aquatic Environmental Services, Inc., designed and resided over the 2009 construction of a trophy bass fishing lake for Jeff Foxworthy in Georgia.  This master planned lake was designed specifically for growing trophy large-mouth bass.  Extensive habitat structure, ridges, brush, feeders, etc were carefully placed during construction.  Once the lake was full the client had the lake mapped utilizing The Mapping Network’s lake mapping technology to reveal this unseen, underwater world.  Combining sub-foot accurate equipment and depth accuracies of up to 1/10th of a foot, the resulting maps provided a  picture of the bottom of the lake.  Mr. Grimes was able to provide a map highlighting the ideal fishing zones in the range of 4 feet to 16 feet deep at 1 foot intervals.  This lake map shows the angler exactly where the fishing hot spots are located on the lake.

Just last week, Aquatic Environmental Services, took a fish survey of the lake and some of the 2 inch bass that were originally stocked in the lake (June, 2009) have grown into 7.5 lb trophy bass!  What a great example of how a professional lake manager can use their knowledge and experience to produce world class results in a short period of time.

Professional lake management company, Aquatic Environmental Services, has created an environment where trophy bass are prospering.

Color Shaded Depths show the special design of this trophy bass lake. Structure was placed and marked with a GPS

Lake Mapping as a Tool for Successful Lake Management

Successful lake management requires an understanding of composition, depth and volume of your lake.  Greg Grimes, President of Aquatic  Environmental  Services, Inc (Ball Ground, Georgia), had a client request an updated lake map to note current depths and mark sediment depths.  Information gathered during the lake mapping process helped Mr. Grimes’ client better comprehend the level of sedimentation building up over time in this fishing lake.  The resulting map provided the baseline depth profile needed for long-term sedimentation monitoring.  Plus, the property owners had several large format wall maps printed to show friends and family where to catch the big ones!
