Start a Sediment Plan with a Map

Here at The Mapping Network, we understand the challenges and costs associated with locating and removing sediment. We specialize in accurately mapping bodies of water, calculating the water volume, collecting sediment depth samples at critical areas and monitoring the distribution of sediment over time.

Common questions from our clients:

  • Where is the highest sedimentation occurring?
  • How much fluffy sediment (in cubic yards) is in each cove?
  • If the lake is drawn down 5 ft, what would the shoreline look like?
  • How much water (gallons and acre-ft) is in the lake?
  • If we make each cove a minimum of 4 feet deep for boat access how much material do we need to remove?
  • By undertaking this mapping process will it save us money in the end?

Each of these questions can be answered by mapping the lake using The Mapping Network’s system. We are able to locate the problems areas and calculate the volume (in cubic yards) of material to be removed. The lake mapping data allows us to show the new shoreline if a lake is drawn down 1 ft, 5 ft, 10 ft, etc. Also, calculating water volume at various lake levels can be done. One of the best aspects of the mapping process is it allows the owner and contractor to be on the same page. Successful planning and execution of the dredging project can ensue. We have seen clients save tremendous amounts of money by using The Mapping Network to survey their lake before undertaking the dredging process.

The time to act is now. Don’t waste another year trying to manage your resource without this information.

HOA Selects The Mapping Network for Sediment Mapping and Analysis

The Mapping Network recently completed a mapping project for a large-scale home owners association in Arkansas.  The large lake had 8 coves and several homeowners were having difficulties accessing their dock due to sedimentation. The overall goal of the lake mapping project was to survey each cove for future dredging along with the creation of an accurate map of the entire lake.  The Mapping Network collected water depths over the entire lake and fluffy sediment levels for all areas under 10 feet of water.

3D models were generated to show how much sediment had accumulated in each cove.  Contour maps were also made for each cove and given to the lake manager and engineer to review for dredging planning.  The Mapping Network then created cut-fill calculations and maps based on the specifications of the lake manager.  The HOA then used this information as part of the bid package given to dredging companies.  Presenting the precise plans took out the guess work and kept all the dredging contractors on task and it is projected to save the HOA an estimated $5,000-$12,000 per cove!  An incredible cost savings when compiled over 8 coves.

Here at The Mapping Network, we specialize in accurately mapping bodies of water, calculating the water volume, collecting sediment depth samples at critical areas and monitoring the distribution of sediment over time.  We have a nationwide group of professionals specializing in all facets of lake management.

The bottom line – This powerful information allows for smart management and planning decisions and will serve as a baseline for future projects.  A great value!

In the maps abover, the HOA needed the depths of the cove to be a minimum of 4 foot for boat access. Mapping Network located the areas where the current depth was less than four feet, which was the dredging zone. The Mapping Network calculated the dredging area and volume. The current lake bathymetry (left) and the post-dredge contours (middle)are shown in blue shading. A cut-fill model (right) shows areas of cut needed to reach the goal.

NPDES is Here – Pond Owners and Managers Take Notice!

SOLitude Lake Management reminds pond and lake owners to follow the new NPDES permit rules…

After many years of judicial and legislative battling, the NPDES permit for aquatic pesticide applications has been finalized and went into effect on October 31, 2011and there is a high probability that this new permit will directly affect you and your pond. NPDES stands for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System, and it is the primary federal legislation that regulates point source pollution to the waters of the U.S. Although aquatic pesticide applications were previously exempt from this permitting requirement, recent judicial reinterpretation of the law has mandated that the residues resulting from these applications should be regulated within the same framework as other water pollutants. So basically, if you own or manage a property with a pond, then you will be responsible for making sure that all pesticide applications related to the pond meet the requirements of the new permit. Some of the activities that will be regulated under this permit include algae and weed treatments in the water, shoreline vegetation control, and mosquito control. And the most important part of this new law is that as a decision maker or financier for the applications, you are just as liable for permit compliance as the applicator. SŌLitude Lake Management utilizes a specialized lake management software program to manage our application data, and many facets of permit compliance are already part of our daily operations. We will work with our clients and our industry partners to ensure that all of our operations are compliant with the permit requirements, and can provide consulting services for any operator in the development of a NPDES Pesticide General Permit compliance program

Contact our office today to schedule a consultation with our staff to make sure you are prepared to answer those VERY important questions from homeowners and Board members.

Sediment Mapping Saves POA Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in Dredging Costs

by Trent Lewis (Pond Medics, Inc.)

We recently worked with Lakeside on Preston HOA, in Plano, on their dredging project. The lakes in the community were approaching 18 years old and sediment had accumulated in the lakes to the extent islands had formed as if there were underwater volcanoes erupting and new land was emerging! Lakeside knew dredging was imminent, so they called several dredging contractors and asked them to submit quotes to perform the work. What they received from the contractors was a multitude of different opinions on what the lake bottom looked like and what needed to be dredged. As a result, they had many different quotes to choose from. But, what was the right choice? Our work began when the lakes and landscape committee chairman called us for help.

Mapping the lakes was the best option for fully understanding the severity of the sediment issues.  Once the maps were complete, a meeting was organized to review the maps and determine the areas the HOA deemed most important to dredge. This would help focus the dredging efforts and help reduce overall dredging expenses. Using the data we collected to make the bathymetric map, we were able to calculate the cubic yardage of sediment needed to be removed in the critical areas the HOA identified. Now, Lakeside on Preston had objective, hard data from which to ask for dredging quotes. It was no longer subjective to what the dredging company thought needed to be done. For the first time in the Lakeside dredging project, the community was at the helm. The critical dredging area data was tabulated, formatted into a visual exhibit, included in a new Request for Proposal (RFP) and present to the dredging contractors.

The new dredging proposals were received two weeks later and reviewed. The first time Lakeside did this, they received quotes that varied in excess of 300% from one contractor to another. This time, after our new RFP was sent out, we received quotes that were within several thousand dollars of each other. Finally, Lakeside was able to compare “apples to apples” between dredging contractors. Why? All the contractors were all looking at, and bidding from, the same data.  Shortly thereafter, Lakeside on Preston chose a dredging contractor to perform the work and dredging began. PondMedics stayed on to assist the HOA with the project administration. The dredging contractor used the maps to help locate the areas they were contracted to dredge.

When all the lakes were completely dredged, we re‐mapped the lakes.  Because we were able to map the lakes prior to dredging, we could now provide Lakeside on Preston HOA a complete set of “before and after” maps. An otherwise unseen world, was now revealed to the community and everyone was able to see the underwater changes. Lakeside on Preston will present the completed project to the residents during the spring Annual Meeting, using the before/after maps to demonstrate to the residents how their money was used effectively in this dredging project and how the lake maps saved the POA hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Larry Hairston, a member of the board of directors and the lake committee chairperson for Lakeside on Preston HOA summarized it this way:

“When I first looked at the proposal the HOA had previously obtained it was in the neighborhood of $450,000 to perform the dredging. By going to multiple vendors with the information you [PondMedics, Inc.]supplied, the prices eventually came down and the final cost is in the neighborhood of $200,000. I am certain we saved well over $200,000 by competitively bidding the projects, but more specifically by determining the amount of silt to be removed. The other valuable service PondMedics performed was confirmation of satisfactory completion by the dredging company, using the mapping technology.”

A color-shaded sediment map created by The Mapping Network. Our automated sediment mapping system can precisely locate problems areas needing to be dredged. Knowing exactly where to remove sediment not only saves the client money, but protects the environment by limiting the extent of the dredging footprint.

Jeff Foxworthy Lake Map and Trophy Bass Fishing

Over the past couple years Greg Grimes with Aquatic Environmental Services, Inc., has been working closely with Jeff Foxworthy to create a one-of-a-kind master planned lake designed specifically for growing trophy large-mouth bass. Extensive habitat structure, ridges, brush, feeders, etc were carefully placed during construction. GPS data points were recorded for each location and placed on a map for future reference.  Once the lake was full the client had the lake mapped utilizing The Mapping Network’s lake mapping technology to reveal this unseen, underwater world.  Combining sub-foot accurate equipment and depth accuracies of up to 1/10th of a foot, the resulting maps provided an amazing picture of the bottom of the lake.

The Mapping Network was able to provide a series of maps including a special map highlighting the ideal fishing zones in the range of 4 feet to 16 feet deep at 1 foot intervals.  This lake map shows the angler exactly where the fishing hot spots are located on the lake.

A virtual fly-over and swim-through were generated to show friends, family and guests what the lakes looks like under water.  This technology greatly assists the anglers knowledge of the lake and will improve the likelihood of catching a big one!

Aquatic Environmental Services just took a fish survey of the lake and some of the 2 inch bass that were originally stocked in the lake (June, 2009) have grown into 7.5 lb trophy bass!  What a great example of how a professional lake manager can use their knowledge and experience to produce world class results in a short period of time

Professional lake management company, Aquatic Environmental Services, have created an environment where trophy bass are prospering.

Color Shaded Depths show the special design of this trophy bass lake. Structure was placed and marked with a GPS
