Hydrographic Survey and Sediment Analysis in Oklahoma

The Mapping Network and Pond Medics complete project for POA in Oklahoma using specialized sub-bottom mapping system

A property owner association in Oklahoma with a 50 year old lake is struggling with the challenges associated with sediment buildup in their lake.  Using The Mapping Network’s sub-bottom mapping system, the POA was not only able to see the contours of the lake but gain an understanding of the sediment distribution throughout the lake.   In much of the lake, half the original depth is now filled with sediment.  This technology provides critical information for the POA to make educated management decisions about how to best remove the sediment.  Below is one of several maps produced for the POA which shows the sediment depth in a color gradient.   For more information about how sub-bottom/sediment mapping can work for your lake contact The Mapping Network today!

Side Scan Sonar Provides Visual Aid in Hydrographic Survey

Side Scan Sonar is Valuable Tool for The Mapping Network

The Mapping Network offers side scan sonar capabilities to efficiently create an image of the lake bottom.  Side scan sonar imagery is commonly used as a tool to detect features under the surface of the lake such as structure, debris, old channels, trees, pipes, old roads, etc.  These side scan images are typically acquired along with bathymetric surveying and sub-bottom (sediment) mapping.  Common applications for side scan sonar are fish habitat location, sediment monitoring, debris location (shipwrecks, etc), dredging operations and environmental studies.

The Mapping Network uses side scan sonar to identify anomalies on the lake bottom for further analysis.  Using the “surface hardness” functionality The Mapping Network noticed an area with a firm surface.  A closer look revealed a gravel pile with dozens of tires for fish habitat.

Down scan sonar, a part of side scan sonar collection, provides a slice, or profile view of the lake bottom.  In these examples the gravel pile with tires can be seen (top) along with old creek channels and tree structure.

Sediment Mapping and Analysis Project from Foster Lake Management

Foster Lake Management recently completed a mapping project for a home owners association in North Carolina.  The inlet area of the lake is suffering from sediment buildup. The overall goals of the lake mapping project involved surveying the depths of the entire lake, collecting sediment depth samples, calculating the amount of sediment currently in the inlet area and creating a dredge plan for a minimum water depth of 3 feet.   Foster Lake Management collected water depths over the entire lake and fluffy sediment levels for the inlet areas.  The Mapping Network then generated detailed hydrographic maps, 3D models, and sediment volume maps for the inlet area.  The HOA is now in the process of selecting bids for the removal of sediment to attain the 3 foot minimum depth.

Here at The Mapping Network, we specialize in accurately mapping bodies of water, calculating the water volume, collecting sediment depth samples at critical areas and monitoring the distribution of sediment over time.  We have a nationwide group of professionals specializing in all facets of lake management.

The bottom line – This powerful information allows for smart management and planning decisions and will serve as a baseline for future projects.  A great value!

In the maps above, the HOA needed the depths of the cove to be a minimum of 3 foot for boat access. Mapping Network located the areas where the current depth was less than 3 feet, which was the dredging zone.  The Mapping Network calculated the dredging area and volume. The current lake bathymetry (left) and the post-dredge contours (middle) are shown in blue shading. A cut-fill model (right) shows areas of cut needed to reach the goal.
