Sediment and Dredging Examples

Retention Pond Management

A hydrographic and sediment study was recently conducted on a retention pond to provide a information to help with proper management. It’s important to know how much sediment and other material accumulates in retention basins to insure that it’s functioning properly. The image below shows the sediment thickness found by the sediment probes and sonar technology. Sediment_InletPoint_001

Coal Ash Pond Bathymetry and Dredge Survey

The Mapping Network performed a hydrographic and dredge survey for a power plant’s coal ash ponds. These can be difficult because of the composition of material.  With the combination our sonar, GPS, and years of experience with coal ash, we were able to give them an accurate estimate of ash volume.

Dredge Channel Planning Using Soft Sediment Analysis

The Mapping Network performed a pre-dredge and sediment study on a county reservoir.  Their mission was to locate a historic channel buried under several feet of soft sediment. The Mapping Network had to carefully examine the sonar readings and sediment probe information to best locate the channel.  The result of the analaysis providing accurate information to plot the idea course for the dredger to input into their Dredgepak software system.

Dredge Volume Verification

Have a dredging project coming up for your lake or pond?   How do you know if the dredge contractor removed the correct amount of sediment?  The Mapping Network specializes in pre-dredge and post-dredge surveys to verify dredge projects are done according to plan.  We use top-of-the-line GPS and sonar technology to accurately survey the lake bottom.

The map on the left shows the current water depths in the pond. The map on the right shows what the pond will look like once the soft sediment is removed

Hydrogaphic Survey for Dredge Quantity Verification

The Mapping Network completed a hydrographic survey to show the status of a dredging project for a drinking water reservoir.   A combination of Hypack, RTK GPS, and Odom CV100 Sonar was used to collect and process he bathymetry data.  A comparison with the pre-dredge survey was calculated to verify the amount and location of material removed.    This verifies the dredging has reached the planned depths and keeps all parties on the same page.

Calculating Sediment Volume in Virginia Lake

Solitude Lake Management, a lake mapping partner with The Mapping Network, completed a bathymetry and sediment survey for a HOA in Virginia.  Current water depths and volume are required for treatment applications and fisheries management.  Sediment samples throughout the lake identify problem areas and quantify the total amount of sediment.

Monitoring Sediment Removal of Dredging Project

The Mapping Network completed a hydrographic survey to show the current dredging status for a reservoir in Iowa.  The survey crew also collected sediment measurements to quantify the amount of soft sediment remaining in the dredge zone.   The Mapping Network generated maps to display the amount and location of material yet to be removed.  This information allows the client and dredge contractor to plan the remaining dredge schedule for the project.

Pond Water Depth and Excavation Plan in Atlanta, Georgia

The Mapping Network and Aquatic Environmental Services teamed up to create a bathymetric study and excavation plan for a homeowner near Atlanta, Georgia.  The owner wants to achieve a minimum 3 foot water depth in the entire pond.  3D models comparing the proposed lake bottom with the existing lake bottom and calculated the amount of hard material to be removed.  This critical information will be used to assist with bids for dredging contractors to remove all the material.

Proposed excavation plan to achieve minimum 3 ft depth in pond.

Water Pump Intake Bathymetry

The Mapping Network has extensive experience performing hydrographic surveys on intake channels for power plants and drinking water intakes. On the example below The Mapping Network conducted a pre-dredge bathymetric survey along with calculating the amount of material needing to be removed.  This information will be used to collect bids for dredging the area.

Tracking Lake Sediment in Virginia

Solitude Lake Management created a bathymetry and sediment volume study for a property owners association in Virginia. The pond was mapped to understand current water depths and to calculate the amount of accumulated sediment.  This timely analysis can facilitate future dredging and appropriate actions for maintaining a stable environment.
