Bathymetry and Sediment Survey of a Lake

The Mapping Network and their nationwide group of partners receive many calls each week about sediment issues on lakes.  More often than not, these callers have a fairly good idea about the state of their lake from simply looking at if from the shore on while on the boat.  However, trying to quantify the severity of sedimentation and planning for a potential dredging project is much more difficult.  This is where our experienced teams come into play.  We have the tools, knowledge and experience to accurately survey the current lake depths along with mapping the sediment thickness in the lake.

Below is an example of a lake that had sediment accumulating in the usual spots (inflows) however there were a couple other problem areas where new homes had recently been built.  The HOA used this map to plan for dredging in the main inflow of the lake and also created a bulletin to property owners about the importance of controlling erosion into the lake – eventually this will lead to more dredging in the future.

A lake surveyed by The Mapping Network included creating a contour and 3D shaded depth map of the current lake depths. Also a sediment thickness map of the entire lake was generated.

The Mapping Network is instrumental in bringing GPS lake mapping technology to the recreational market.  Their experience wit the most efficient GPS and sonar technology allows their partners, like us, to offer these unique services to our clients.  Pond Medics utilizes this lake mapping technology to reveal this unseen, underwater world.  Combining sub-foot accurate equipment and depth accuracies of up to 1/10th of a foot, we can produce a picture of what few people will ever see – the bottom of your lake.

2014 Hypack Conference

The Mapping Network attended the annual Hypack Conference in Mobile, Alabama.  The 3 Day event featured professional hydrographic surveyors from around the world sharing their expertise on data collection, processing and final map production.  The Mapping Network team was able to learn about the latest trends in bathymetry, sediment mapping and dredging projects.  Knowledge gained will be passed on to our lake mapping partner network and customers.

For the best results in mapping, it’s best to consult with a lake management company equipped with the very latest in GPS mapping technology.  Along with standard contour maps, The Mapping Network creates virtual media solutions on YouTube including a fly-over video and virtual underwater virtual swim-through.  With this knowledge, you can add layers of depth to the information you seek to maintain a beautiful lake.

Bathymetry and Watershed Map

The Mapping Network just completed a lake survey for a property owner association.  The lake has experienced significant sediment in the coves and main river inlet over the years.  The Mapping Network sampled the sediment structure and mapped the sludge thickness to help the client in the dredging bid process.  Part of the report included understanding sources of sediment and how activity within the watershed will ultimately affect the lake.   Below is a map showing the lake map (in blue) and it’s 2,017 acre watershed.
