Bathymetry and Sediment Survey of a Lake

The Mapping Network and their nationwide group of partners receive many calls each week about sediment issues on lakes.  More often than not, these callers have a fairly good idea about the state of their lake from simply looking at if from the shore on while on the boat.  However, trying to quantify the severity of sedimentation and planning for a potential dredging project is much more difficult.  This is where our experienced teams come into play.  We have the tools, knowledge and experience to accurately survey the current lake depths along with mapping the sediment thickness in the lake.

Below is an example of a lake that had sediment accumulating in the usual spots (inflows) however there were a couple other problem areas where new homes had recently been built.  The HOA used this map to plan for dredging in the main inflow of the lake and also created a bulletin to property owners about the importance of controlling erosion into the lake – eventually this will lead to more dredging in the future.

A lake surveyed by The Mapping Network included creating a contour and 3D shaded depth map of the current lake depths. Also a sediment thickness map of the entire lake was generated.

For the best results in mapping, it’s best to consult with a lake management company equipped with the very latest in GPS mapping technology.  Along with standard contour maps, The Mapping Network creates virtual media solutions on YouTube including a fly-over video and virtual underwater virtual swim-through.  With this knowledge, you can add layers of depth to the information you seek to maintain a beautiful lake.

Georgia HOA Uses The Mapping Network for Sediment Mapping and Analysis

Aquatic Environmental Services, Inc (Ball Ground, GA) and The Mapping Network recently completed a mapping project for a home owners association in Georgia.  The lake has a history of significant sediment problems.  Aquatic Environmental Services, Inc mapped the lake in 2007 and the lake had been dredged shortly thereafter.  Now, four years after dredging the lake, homeowners are having difficulties navigating through the coves.  Aquatic Environmental  Services, Inc., updated the lake map a week ago to note current water depths and mark sediment depths.

Another component of the project was to calculate the amount of material needed to be removed in order to make the coves 4 foot deep. 3D models were generated to show how much sediment had accumulated in each cove.  Contour maps were also made for each cove and given to the lake manager and engineer to review for dredging planning.  The Mapping Network then created cut-fill calculations and maps based on the specifications of the lake manager.  The HOA will then use this information as part of the bid package given to dredging companies.  Presenting the precise plans took out the guess work and keep all the dredging contractors on task.

Information gathered during the lake mapping process helped Mr. Grimes’ client better comprehend the level of sedimentation building up over time in the lake.  The resulting map provided the baseline depth profile needed for long-term sedimentation monitoring.

Here at The Mapping Network, we specialize in accurately mapping bodies of water, calculating the water volume, collecting sediment depth samples at critical areas and monitoring the distribution of sediment over time.  We have a nationwide group of professionals specializing in all facets of lake management.

The bottom line – This powerful information allows for smart management and planning decisions and will serve as a baseline for future projects.  A great value!

In the maps above, the HOA needed the depths of the cove to be a minimum of 4 foot for boat access. Mapping Network located the areas where the current depth was less than four feet, which was the dredging zone. The Mapping Network calculated the dredging area and volume. The current lake bathymetry (left) and the post-dredge contours (middle)are shown in blue shading. A cut-fill model (right) shows areas of cut needed to reach the goal.

Dallas – Fort Worth, Texas Lake Mapping

Bathymetric Lake Mapping was performed by Trent Lewis with Pond Medics, Inc., for a private homeowner in a suburb northwest of Dallas, Texas.  The purpose of this project was to create a base map of lake depths and locate areas of sediment accumulation.  The mapping techniques utilized in this project and subsequent lake mapping results allowed Pond Medics to devise an accurate resource management plan for the association.

Mr. Lewis says to “think of your lake map as a window into an unseen world. The lake map can be used to track changes in this dynamic environment. Use it as a planning and budgeting tool in your community. The sooner a lake is mapped, the more informed your lake management decisions will be.”

The finished project included a Bathymetric Lake Map with 3D Color-shaded depths and contour map with locations of high risk sediment areas.

Lake Manager is Growing 7 lb Bass in 28 months

Greg Grimes with Aquatic Environmental Services, Inc., designed and resided over the 2009 construction of a trophy bass fishing lake for Jeff Foxworthy in Georgia.  This master planned lake was designed specifically for growing trophy large-mouth bass.  Extensive habitat structure, ridges, brush, feeders, etc were carefully placed during construction.  Once the lake was full the client had the lake mapped utilizing The Mapping Network’s lake mapping technology to reveal this unseen, underwater world.  Combining sub-foot accurate equipment and depth accuracies of up to 1/10th of a foot, the resulting maps provided a  picture of the bottom of the lake.  Mr. Grimes was able to provide a map highlighting the ideal fishing zones in the range of 4 feet to 16 feet deep at 1 foot intervals.  This lake map shows the angler exactly where the fishing hot spots are located on the lake.

Just last week, Aquatic Environmental Services, took a fish survey of the lake and some of the 2 inch bass that were originally stocked in the lake (June, 2009) have grown into 7.5 lb trophy bass!  What a great example of how a professional lake manager can use their knowledge and experience to produce world class results in a short period of time.

Professional lake management company, Aquatic Environmental Services, has created an environment where trophy bass are prospering.

Lake Mapping as a Tool for Successful Lake Management

Successful lake management requires an understanding of composition, depth and volume of your lake.  Greg Grimes, President of Aquatic  Environmental  Services, Inc (Ball Ground, Georgia), had a client request an updated lake map to note current depths and mark sediment depths.  Information gathered during the lake mapping process helped Mr. Grimes’ client better comprehend the level of sedimentation building up over time in this fishing lake.  The resulting map provided the baseline depth profile needed for long-term sedimentation monitoring.  Plus, the property owners had several large format wall maps printed to show friends and family where to catch the big ones!
