Drought Highlights Urgency for Understanding Current Water Volume of Lakes and Rivers

Bathymetry Study on Rivers

Widespread drought over the past couple years has resulted in many phone calls from homeowners, engineers and government agencies concerned about water levels in their lakes. Whether it be for recreation, sediment build-up or monitoring sources of drinking water, the importance of having an accurate water depth map has never been higher.

We are highlighting two recent projects involving rivers as drinking water sources. River systems are continually evolving and the need to have up-to-date bathymetry is necessary for municipalities to understand the water capacity.

The first project was for a medium size city needing to construct a new intake on the river. Engineers needed to identify the optimal location of the intake. Bathymetry of the river also gave city engineers the ability to calculate total water capacity in the river and what the capacity would be at each elevation in case of a drought.

The second project was very similar in that the municipality had three segments of a river plus a 75 acre lake that provided the city with water. The city has a large agricultural production plant that consumes a tremendous amount of water. As the recent drought has lingered, the city was concerned about providing enough water to its citizens. They needed to complete a bathymetric survey to make sure adequate water was available, so the pumps don’t run dry. If there wasn’t enough water in their current inventory the city would have to run pipe 3 miles to another water source. The resulting study indicated significantly more water was available than originally thought so for now the city will not need to implement any emergency plans.

Bathymetry and Sediment Survey of a Lake

The Mapping Network and their nationwide group of partners receive many calls each week about sediment issues on lakes.  More often than not, these callers have a fairly good idea about the state of their lake from simply looking at if from the shore on while on the boat.  However, trying to quantify the severity of sedimentation and planning for a potential dredging project is much more difficult.  This is where our experienced teams come into play.  We have the tools, knowledge and experience to accurately survey the current lake depths along with mapping the sediment thickness in the lake.

Below is an example of a lake that had sediment accumulating in the usual spots (inflows) however there were a couple other problem areas where new homes had recently been built.  The HOA used this map to plan for dredging in the main inflow of the lake and also created a bulletin to property owners about the importance of controlling erosion into the lake – eventually this will lead to more dredging in the future.

A lake surveyed by The Mapping Network included creating a contour and 3D shaded depth map of the current lake depths. Also a sediment thickness map of the entire lake was generated.

Bathymetry and Watershed Map

The Mapping Network just completed a lake survey for a property owner association.  The lake has experienced significant sediment in the coves and main river inlet over the years.  The Mapping Network sampled the sediment structure and mapped the sludge thickness to help the client in the dredging bid process.  Part of the report included understanding sources of sediment and how activity within the watershed will ultimately affect the lake.   Below is a map showing the lake map (in blue) and it’s 2,017 acre watershed.

Bathymetric Studies: The Tools You Need to Help Budget for Lake and Pond Dredging

(Source: Solitude Lake Management Newsletter.  http://www.solitudelakemanagement.com/)

Did you know that a lake or pond, left to nature, has a distinct lifespan? Sediment in stormwater runoff, grass clippings, leaves, and other yard debris that find their way into the lake or pond add nutrients and accumulate on the bottom. This accumulation of nutrient rich sediment will gradually reduce the depth and volume of the pond while also feeding harmful algae growth. As owners and managers of ponds, we play an active role in maintaining the “healthy lifestyle” of a pond through the management program we choose and implement.

A properly maintained lake or pond often has aeration, healthy riparian buffers and well established populations of beneficial aerobic bacteria. This integrated approach to lake and pond management helps prolong the life of your waterbody, making it healthy and enjoyable for you and the aquatic life which inhabit it. But, even well maintained lakes and ponds, over time, will have to face some amount of dredging, which will likely be one of the most costly projects that a community or pond owner will undergo during the life of their lake or pond.

Proper planning for a dredging project could mean cost savings. SOLitude Lake Management recommends that you have a bathymetric and sedimentation study performed every three to five years (in conjunction with the community reserve study) to make certain that the bottom of your pond isn’t changing more rapidly than you are anticipating. Having the study performed on a regular basis will help to establish patterns and will assist in determining the size, magnitude, necessary budget, and timing for future dredging projects.

Above and beyond dredging, bathymetry and sedimentation mapping can be used for many other purposes. Bathymetry will provide much needed pond information such as precise surface acreage and depths. This knowledge can provide a new world for pond owners and managers. It can help you properly place aeration or structural fish cover within the pond, provide accurate information for fish stocking and can even give fishermen an idea of where the fish are hiding, should the lake or pond be used for fishing.

Certified Hydrographic Survey and Sediment Map – Solitude Lake Management

Solitude Lake Management completed a certified hydrographic survey and sediment survey as part of a dredging analysis report.  This 29 acre lake, originally built in the early 1900’s has an average water depth of 2.6 feet.  Through sediment sampling, the average soft sediment thickness is 2.1 feet.  Over time the lake has lost almost half of its original capacity to sediment.  The estimated sediment volume was calculated and shown on a map.  This will allow engineers to create an efficient removal plan.  Dredging contractors can bid with confidence on how much sediment is actually in the lake.  The homeowners will ultimately benefit most from having an initial hydrographic survey because they will be able to control the project from start to finish – taking out the guess work and making sure their lake is restored for the lowest cost possible.
