Hydrographic and Sediment Survey of Lake in Kansas City, MO

The Mapping Network created a hydrographic and sediment survey for a property owners association in a suburb of Kansas City, Missouri.  The client was experiencing an increase in sediment on the main inflow and also 7 other coves.  Residents were having difficulties accessing the main body of the lake from their docks due to shallow water.  The POA needed to know how much sediment had accumulated in each cove to budget for removal in the near future.  As a result of the lake survey the POA not only has an understanding of the amount of sediment in the coves, but they also have an accurate map of the entire lake.  This map will be used by the property owners as a fishing map and as a baseline for future monitoring of sedimentation.

Lake Bathymetry Study of Pond in St. Louis, Missouri

The Mapping Network and Leisure Ponds teamed up to create a bathymetric study for a pond on a commercial property in St. Louis, Missouri.   Up-to-date water depths and volume are required for treatment applications, fisheries management and monitoring sedimentation rates.   Jim Darlington, owner of Leisure Ponds also generated a report on the health of the pond to ensure proper management and continued enjoyment for employees.

Bathymetry and Sediment Survey of a Lake

The Mapping Network and their nationwide group of partners receive many calls each week about sediment issues on lakes.  More often than not, these callers have a fairly good idea about the state of their lake from simply looking at if from the shore on while on the boat.  However, trying to quantify the severity of sedimentation and planning for a potential dredging project is much more difficult.  This is where our experienced teams come into play.  We have the tools, knowledge and experience to accurately survey the current lake depths along with mapping the sediment thickness in the lake.

Below is an example of a lake that had sediment accumulating in the usual spots (inflows) however there were a couple other problem areas where new homes had recently been built.  The HOA used this map to plan for dredging in the main inflow of the lake and also created a bulletin to property owners about the importance of controlling erosion into the lake – eventually this will lead to more dredging in the future.

A lake surveyed by The Mapping Network included creating a contour and 3D shaded depth map of the current lake depths. Also a sediment thickness map of the entire lake was generated.

Also a sediment thickness map of the entire lake was generated.  The client was able to visualize where dredging will take place and also quantify the amount of material needing to be removed.

The Mapping Network is instrumental in bringing GPS lake mapping technology to the recreational market.  Their experience wit the most efficient GPS and sonar technology allows their partners, like us, to offer these unique services to our clients.  Pond Medics utilizes this lake mapping technology to reveal this unseen, underwater world.  Combining sub-foot accurate equipment and depth accuracies of up to 1/10th of a foot, we can produce a picture of what few people will ever see – the bottom of your lake.

Lake Bathymetry in St. Louis, MO

Using a GPS Lake Map to Create Management Plan

Jim Darlington, President of Leisure Ponds, mapped a pond in the St. Louis area for a residential Home Owners Association.

The pond surveyed was approximately 2.7 acres and had shown warning signs of sedimentation.  GPS Lake mapping was conducted on site to reveal the true lake depths of the ponds.  In addition to the bathymetric survey, sedimentation depths were collected and a model of sedimentation levels was created to estimate the volume of sludge in the lake.  During the mapping process, the HOA found out that the middle of the lake had roughly 2 to 3 feet of sediment accumulation.  This information provided the baseline depth profile needed for long-term sedimentation monitoring and dredging plans.  The mapping techniques utilized in this project allows Leisure Ponds to accurately isolate areas of high sedimentation for removal and help lake managers budget accordingly.

Zorinsky Lake Eradicates Zebra Mussels…For Now.

The refilling of Zorinsky Lake has begun after it was drained for seven months in an effort to kill off the invasive zebra mussel.

The Army Corps of Engineers closed the gates to the lake Tuesday.

Victory has been cautiously declared, but the zebra mussel is notoriously difficult to kill off. The goal behind draining the lake was to freeze out any living mussels. Because dirt clogged access to the drain, the lake was not completely emptied. As a result, it is possible that some mussels survived, especially around the 168th Street bridge, officials say.

These zebra mussels were found at Zorinsky Lake this winter.
